Ernst Graner was born in Werdau on September 25th, 1865. He studied at the Vienna Academy under Lichtenfels, where he discovered his talent for landscape and architectural painting. He exhibited his work in Vienna beginning in 1890. His work is now part of the collection of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and Education, Vienna; the Modern Art Gallery, Vienna; and the National Museum, Vienna.
Graner's specialty was his portrayal of Vienna street scenes, particularly the views of its Cathedrals and crowded squares. He painted primarily in watercolours, using delicate colour tones and brushstrokes. This is a particularly stunning work is of a good size and is dated 1918. It depicts Minoritenkirche in Vienna, and the addition of the figures of the two women as well as the gentleman and carriage make it especially charming.
