Painted in 1867 by Victorian artist William Henry Midwood, who was known for his domestic scenes in humble households. Midwood exhibited at the Society of British Artists between 1867 and 1871.

This painting depicts a charming interior genre scene of a sailor proposing to his love. The artist has perfectly captured the interaction between the two figures. It is superbly painted and with fine brushwork, including the interior and the cat situated in the foreground. The work is a charming example of Victorian genre painting at its best.
