18th century mahogany turned treen cat or plate cross, constructed of six finely turned mahogany spindle arms which are joined to two central rotating turned ball sections. This example is rare having the central section rotating and has a rich coloured patina. English, circa 1780.
Cats were constructed of either metal or wood and used to support bowls of different sizes or work baskets. If made of metal they were placed close to the fire to keep food warm. The term "cat' was used as it would land on its feet no matter which way it falls and is often found near the fire.
