British genre painter Thomas Brooks depicted subjects including dramas connected with the sea and sentimental Victorian scenes, usually involving a wistful heroine. Born in Hull, Yorkshire in 1818, he studied in London at Sass's Art School and later at the Royal Academy under Henry Perronet Briggs. He traveled to Paris to paint before returning to Hull where he made a name for himself painting portraits and genre scenes. He exhibited from 1843-1882 at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and the Royal Society of British Artists. He enjoyed considerable success, particularly with his dramatic seascapes which, were very close to his heart.

This work is a superb example of Brooks' early work depicting a mother with her young son and baby, seated on the stoup of their house with the coast in the background. The young boy is excited by the return of his father from sea, accompanied by the family dog. It is housed in an ornate gilt frame.
